Polycystic kidney disease - PKD

Polycystic kidney disease - PKD

It is found in exotic cats, especially the favorite British shorthair.

This disease is due to inheritance of the faulty gene, and is transmissible to 50% of the offspring, so affected cats should be excluded from breeding.

In such developing kittens affected, microcysts in the uterus are still established in the uterus, which continue to grow after birth and pressurize the kidney tissue to the point of dying until they die. The disease sometimes occurs around the age of 7 cats. However, the first symptoms may often occur earlier.

Kidneys with this functional tissue destroyed have no chance of fulfilling their task of filtering waste substances from the body. They then concentrate in the body, harm the organs and cause typical symptoms of kidney failure - frequent drinking and urination, drooling, vomiting, weight loss.

In affected animals, treatment is usually not initiated until the first clinical symptoms have occurred. The treatment consists mainly in support of kidney activity and a sparing diet. Affected animals do not often have to be spent. It is good to neuter them and let calmly and without a burden to live a full life.
