Pituitary tumor in rat

Pituitary tumor in rat

Do not underestimate the first symptoms

Pituitary gland adenoma is the second most common tumor type in female rats. It is a benign (harmless) tumor that lies near the brain. This type of tumor is not as frequently observed as e.g. breast tumor because it grows inside the skull.

Clinical symptoms include poor coordination of movements, walking in a circle, behavioral changes, confusion and, at later stages, loss of limb and mouth function. Rats appear unkempt with the deposition of porphyrin (dye) on the paws. A typical symptom that occurs in a pituitary tumor is the inability to bend the shoulders so that the rat is unable to keep food in its paws.

Antibiotics and corticoids are used to shrink and shrink the tumor, thus suppressing clinical signs. Rather, it is a maintenance therapy and not every medication will help, because even if the tumor is benign, the atrial can continue to grow and exert pressure on the surrounding brain tissue.
