Elbow joint disease in large dogs

Dear clients and animal lovers, we offer you some of the frequently discussed topic.

DLK (Elbow Joint Dysplasia)

It is an inherited, unborn, developmental disease of the elbow joint. Most often affects dogs of large breeds during puberty (3 to 7 months of age). In addition to heredity, breeding predisposition, rapid growth during puberty or excess Ca in the diet and a great physical load contribute to the inception.

DBK (hip dysplasia)

It is a hereditary developmental disease that affects the most common large breeds of dogs (German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, ...). The most important external factor contributing to the development of the disease is overfeeding, which in large breeds contributes to rapid growth. DBK leads to secondary changes in the hip joints, which may lead to disability in the future.

Some tips on how to avoid DLK and DBK complications:

the dog should have at least a year of high quality and balanced feed suitable for large breeds.
avoid extreme physical activity.
maintain a constant weight after reaching adult age.

Our clinic was visited by a 7-month-old German shepherd, whose owners wanted to know if everything went well with the development of his joints. Preliminary X-ray showed no pathological finding and owners can still enjoy the good health of their pet.
