A few months ago he visited our clinic Dasty, 12 year old maltese dog. The owner did not bring him because of no significant problem, they actually came only for routine inspection. We talked to the owner and found that the dog drinks too much, too much urine, has a great appetite ... besides, we have seen that the dog has thin skin, little poor quality hair and altered body with a large belly. According to these indications we have obtained a suspicion that the dog suffers from so-called. Cushing's syndrome.

For Dasty and his owner, we devised a diagnostic and therapy plan. Dasty's owner willingly agreed with the proposal, so we started together. We confirmed the diagnosis of hyperadrenocorticism that causes Cushing's syndrome by special hormonal test. In this disease, the body produces extremely high levels of the stress hormone cortisol. This causes a variety of clinical symptoms, some of which we have seen at Dasty's first visit.

After confirming the correct diagnosis, we could start therapy. Dasty's owner honestly gives him a pill every day, and from time to time he goes to check. And Dasty? In a few months he rejuvenated in a few years. In addition to drinking and urinating, which is back to normal, Dasty's figure has also been adjusted, his belly shrunk, and his hair is also slowly thickening. Most importantly, he likes to play again and is active.

Dasty can be an example for other owners of older dogs or cats. Some of the changes that we observe in older animals are indeed due to normal aging. At other times, however, there are inconspicuous changes in behavior, movement, weight, hair, etc. just a symptom of serious illness. Do not be afraid to come to our clinic and consult with us the changes you observe as your pet ages. As many patients go through our hands daily, we can recognize the first signs of serious illnesses in these changes. Other times, we can only assure you that these are natural changes when the animal ages.

Preventive examinations for elderly animals help to detect chronic diseases at an early stage, before they cause markedly visible changes to the animal. For example, we can detect diabetes, renal insufficiency or other diseases, use diet or therapy as needed, monitor changes and prolong the life of your pet.

We recommend a preventive examination of dogs and cats of seniors once a year. In addition to clinical examination, it is ideal to have a dog or cat examined for blood and urine. Do you find the annual inspection of an aging animal unnecessarily too often? Believe it is the opposite! Changes in health state in dogs and cats happen very quickly. Approximately, in one human year, animals seem to have aged 7 years.

Quite simply, such senior health check-up can be associated, for example, with annual vaccination. Clinical examination is a matter of course in our clinic during vaccination. It includes, inter alia, measuring temperature, listening to the heart and lungs, controlling mucous membranes and teeth, palpation of lymph nodes and palpation of the abdomen… Do not be afraid to ask for a more comprehensive examination, which should certainly include blood analysis - hematology and biochemistry as well as urine analysis. You can catch it in a glass jug on the way to our clinic and hand it over to us during the inspection.
