Cat acne

Cat acne

Affects cats of all ages and breeds.

Especially Persian cats are predisposed. The cause is still not fully understood. This dermatological disease may be caused by increased sebum production, alteration of composition, but also by stress, immunosuppression (weakening of the immune system) or viral infection.

The most common occurrence is on chin and lips. The chin may seem "dirty" to us. First we observe small black dots (comedones). Later, these small black dots stick with the hair and can only be removed with it. This can lead to the formation of small abscesses and subsequently to the emergence of larger protuberances.

The disease begins to itch and the cat can traumatize the skin, leading to secondary bacterial inflammation of the skin. pyoderma. It can occur once in a lifetime, but in some cases it occurs again after re-treatment and persists for life.

Therapy varies and depends on the stage of the disease. In the initial stages when only the mentioned comedones are present, we regularly treat the affected areas with topical antiseptic agents that dissolve sebum. If there is a secondary inflammation of the skin in the area, it is already necessary to treat the animal with topical or total medicines.

From the hygiene measures, it is ideal to replace all bowls with ceramic or stainless steel and to keep them clean regularly.
